A few days ago I received amazing news... I am going to be an auntie (again)! One of my lifelong friends just determined that she's pregnant and in about six months we will all be greeting a little baby into this world. The moment she told me the news I started thinking about a baby shower, welcome gifts, and all the toys, diapers and outfits that this newborn is going to need. The Real Thanksgiving Truth
Ever since the 19th century, Americans have observed Thanksgiving by imitating the vision of the pilgrims and the Indians sitting down together for a celebratory meal. As pretty as this image of friendship may be, it is not reality. The saga of pilgrims and Indians was one of one-sided friendship. while the Indians provided the pilgrims with food and expertise to make do their first winter the pilgrims gave thanks to them by antagonizing and attacking them. Even though this is not what we want to envision as we join together to celebrate with our relatives and buddies, perhaps it offers a new point of view to the season. The pilgrims were greedy and immoral. They took from the Indians and repaid them in the most severe ways possible. Maybe instead of believing the perfect story of the pilgrims and Indians as buddies each Thanksgiving, we should think about on the hatred the Indians endured at the hands of their "friends" the pilgrims.
