Ever since the 19th century, Americans have observed Thanksgiving by imitating the vision of the pilgrims and the Indians sitting down together for a celebratory meal. As pretty as this image of friendship may be, it is not reality. The saga of pilgrims and Indians was one of one-sided friendship. while the Indians provided the pilgrims with food and expertise to make do their first winter the pilgrims gave thanks to them by antagonizing and attacking them. Even though this is not what we want to envision as we join together to celebrate with our relatives and buddies, perhaps it offers a new point of view to the season. The pilgrims were greedy and immoral. They took from the Indians and repaid them in the most severe ways possible. Maybe instead of believing the perfect story of the pilgrims and Indians as buddies each Thanksgiving, we should think about on the hatred the Indians endured at the hands of their "friends" the pilgrims. Now I don't mean to imply that Thanksgiving should be a solemn day of reflection and tribute, but perhaps we should take the opportunity to think about our own friendships. Of all the things we are thankful for on Thanksgiving, the individuals we love should be at the very top. Thanksgiving is not only a time for us to share our various blessings with those closest to us, but to express our gratitude for their loyal friendship. This Thanksgiving you might think of sending a little something special to express thanks.
